A client's motivation to repair their own body is essential to getting better. Additionally, in my own rehabilitation it has proven that it is basically necessary for successfully mending the body. A lot of people are not really knowing where to start on this path and don't have a self care program. As a Certified Corrective Exercise Specialist with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, I am trained to assess muscle imbalances, teach self care (self-myofascial release, ROM exercises, and stretching), and provide specialized strengthening programs. This hands on educational and client-oriented session is the foundation for the Rehabilitation-Based program. Working with the client, we examine, relax and stretch the muscles, and then activate them through strengthening and movement exercises. This helps prevent injury in a workout session as well as provides the specific area of pain with a more rehabilitative approach. Corrective exercise can be used for many different ailments such as shoulder impairments, structural/hip imbalance issues, neck pain, low back pain, joint laxity, among several others.
The assessment piece can be especially helpful to people that already have an exercise program in place or do not have any familiarity with self care. Observing possible obstacles will provide answers to the problems and create self awareness in the body. As much as I'd like to claim manual therapy is the magic cure, realistically I know that full recovery takes active participation by the person with the injury. Since the goal is to get better, clients should be offered and educated on all the tools that may help them!
